VAT: 0% when the battery goes in with the panels, 23% on its own (SEAI Solar PV Scheme Application Guide, v6.0, 12 Oct 2026). The spread is wide because battery size, brand and whether a new inverter is needed all change the price, so ask for the battery itemised on your quote.
Is there a grant for a solar battery?
Yes: a flat €600 from SEAI for a battery of 5kWh or more, on top of up to €1,800 for the panels, so €2,400 at most.
| What you fit | Panel grant | Battery grant | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2kWp | €1,400 | – | €1,400 |
| 3kWp + battery | €1,600 | €600 | €2,200 |

From SEAI Solar PV Scheme Application Guide, v6.0, 12 Oct 2026. Homes with a qualifying welfare payment or in the Rental Accommodation Scheme can get up to €9,000. The grant must be approved before any work starts. How to apply.
Is a battery worth it in Kerry?
It saves about 17.5c on every kWh you store instead of export, so after the grant Purevolt's battery price needs about 4,000 to 4,600 stored kWh to pay back.
- Without a battery, power you don't use goes to the grid at 15.89c to 19.5c a kWh on standard plans (WattCharger, Aug 2026). Power you use yourself saves your unit rate, 36c to 45c per kWh on standard tariffs (Irish Times, 15 Oct 2026).
- The season matters in Kerry. 10 panels on a south roof in Tralee make about 525 kWh in June and 125 in December (EU PVGIS 5.2). In summer there is spare power most days to fill a battery; in midwinter there is little to store.
- The Department of Energy worked out that a home with a battery and a 4kWp system could save as much as €900 a year, as reported by Irish Times, 25 Sep 2026.
- Our sums use the low end of standard unit rates and the most common export rate. A night-rate tariff or an electric car changes them, so ask the installer to work it out on your own bills.
Can I add a battery to panels I already have?
Yes, but a battery fitted on its own carries 23% VAT instead of 0%, so it costs more than one fitted with the panels.
From SEAI Solar PV Scheme Application Guide, v6.0, 12 Oct 2026. The installer may also need to change the inverter. If SEAI already paid a grant for your panels, ask SEAI whether the battery grant is open to you before you sign anything.

How much does a solar battery cost in Kerry?
On Purevolt's prices a battery adds about €1,300 to €1,400 to a panel install, hybrid inverter included, and SEAI pays a flat €600 towards a battery of 5kWh or more. Fitted with the panels it's 0% VAT; fitted on its own, 23%. (Purevolt; SEAI Solar PV Scheme Application Guide, v6.0, 12 Oct 2026)
Is there a grant for a solar battery?
Yes. SEAI pays a flat €600 for a battery of 5kWh or more, on top of the panel grant, so panels and a battery get up to €2,400 (SEAI Solar PV Scheme Application Guide, v6.0, 12 Oct 2026). Get the letter of offer before any work starts.

0% if it's fitted at the same time as the panels, 23% if it's fitted on its own (SEAI Solar PV Scheme Application Guide, v6.0, 12 Oct 2026).
Is a battery worth it in Kerry?
It pays its way slowly. Every kWh you store and use in the evening, instead of exporting it, is worth about 17.5c more (36c a unit against 18.5c for exports, our sum). After the €600 grant, Purevolt's battery price takes about 4,000 to 4,600 kWh of that to pay back.
Can I add a battery to panels I already have?
Yes. A battery fitted on its own carries 23% VAT (SEAI Solar PV Scheme Application Guide, v6.0, 12 Oct 2026). If your panels already had an SEAI grant, ask SEAI whether the battery grant is open to you before you sign.
Is there a bigger grant on social welfare?
Yes. Homes with a qualifying welfare payment, or in the Rental Accommodation Scheme, can get up to €9,000 for panels and a battery together (SEAI Solar PV Scheme Application Guide, v6.0, 12 Oct 2026).
