What's different about Killarney
Killarney is a tourism town beside Ireland's first national park, and that changes a few things about solar. What we checked:
- Killarney had 14,412 people at the 2022 census, close to the 14,603 it had in 2006. (CSO census figures, citypopulation.de)
- Killarney National Park began in 1932, when an 11,000-acre estate was given to the state, forming the country's first national park. (Wikipedia: Killarney)
- About 1.1 million tourists visit the town each year, and it has an estimated 10,600 tourist beds. (Wikipedia: Killarney)
- SEAI's Non-Domestic Microgen grant is for businesses, farms, schools, community centres and non-profits: €1,800 for a 1kWp system up to €4,800 for 4 to 6kWp, for systems up to 1,000kWp. (SEAI business solar grant)
- On a protected structure or in an Architectural Conservation Area, rooftop panels are only exempt from planning if they don't materially affect the character of the building or area. (gov.ie, 7 Oct 2022)
- Kerry County Council publishes its Architectural Conservation Area boundaries as open data. (data.gov.ie)
- Killarney Eircodes start with V93. (Eircode list)
If your home is a period building or in a conservation area, check before you sign. Owners can ask the council for a declaration on whether planning permission is needed (gov.ie, 7 Oct 2022).

Killarney questions
How much do solar panels cost in Killarney?
For a home, from €5,800 after the SEAI grant on Purevolt's published quotes, and €6,145 for a 3-bed semi on Selectra's figures (Selectra). SEAI says installation typically costs €1,700 to €2,500 per kWp (SEAI).
Can a B&B or guesthouse get a solar grant?
The home grant is for homes. SEAI's Non-Domestic Microgen grant is for businesses: €1,800 for 1kWp up to €4,800 for 4 to 6kWp, and larger systems too (SEAI business solar grant). Whether a B&B counts as a home or a business depends on how it's run, so check with SEAI or the installer before you apply.
Do I need planning permission in Killarney?
For rooftop panels on a house, usually not: there's no area limit anywhere in the country, subject to conditions (gov.ie, 7 Oct 2022). The main conditions are protected structures and Architectural Conservation Areas, where panels mustn't materially affect the character, and Solar Safeguarding Zones near airports and helipads.
How long do panels take to pay back?
Typically five to eight years, depending on how much of the power you use yourself (Irish Times). Power you use saves the full unit price, 36c to 45c per kWh on standard tariffs, while exported power earns around 19.5c per kWh.
What does a battery add?
Purevolt says a standard battery adds around €1,300 to €1,400 (Purevolt). SEAI pays €600 towards one, and fitting a battery lets the panel grant go up to €2,400 (SEAI).
