What's different about Tralee

Tralee is Kerry's county town, with Kerry Airport 20 km away. What we checked for Tralee homes:

  • Tralee had 26,079 people at the 2022 census, up from 23,691 in 2016. (CSO census figures, citypopulation.de)
  • It sits at the head of Tralee Bay, and its climate is described as mild and changeable with abundant rainfall. (Wikipedia: Tralee)
  • 1,189 Kerry households installed solar panels with SEAI grants in 2025, out of 33,048 grants nationally. (SEAI figures reported by Radio Kerry, Jan 2026)
  • Homes can fit rooftop panels without planning permission, apart from limits in 43 Solar Safeguarding Zones around airports, aerodromes and sites with helipads, such as hospitals. (gov.ie, 7 Oct 2022)
  • Kerry Airport is 20 km from Tralee, at Farranfore. (Wikipedia: Tralee)
  • ESB Networks must get an NC6 notification before the panels are fitted. A single-phase home can connect up to about 6kVA. (ESB Networks)
  • Tralee Eircodes start with V92. (Eircode list)

If your home is near Farranfore or a hospital helipad, ask the installer to check the Solar Safeguarding Zone data before quoting. South-facing roofs produce the most electricity (SEAI), so say which way yours faces in the form.

Tralee questions

How much do solar panels cost in Tralee?

From €5,800 after the SEAI grant for a 3.88kWp system on Purevolt's published quotes, up to €7,400 for 7.76kWp (Purevolt). The Irish Times puts an average home at €6,000 to €9,000 after the grant (Irish Times). Home solar has 0% VAT.

Is Kerry too wet for solar panels?

Kerry gets more rain than the east, and the south-east is the sunniest part of Ireland (Wikipedia). Payback figures are national: the Irish Times puts typical payback at five to eight years (Irish Times). Ask the installer to estimate your own roof's output before you commit.

Do I need planning permission in Tralee?

Usually not for rooftop panels on a house: there's no limit on area, anywhere in the country, subject to conditions (gov.ie, 7 Oct 2022). The exceptions are the Solar Safeguarding Zones near airports and helipads, and protected structures or Architectural Conservation Areas, where the panels mustn't materially affect the character.

Do I have to tell ESB Networks?

Yes. An NC6 form goes to ESB Networks with the inverter's type test certificate, and installation starts once that's done (ESB Networks). ESB Networks aims to fit a smart meter within four months of a valid NC6 being processed. Ask your installer who sends the form.

How many Kerry homes have solar panels?

1,189 Kerry households installed panels with SEAI grants in 2025 alone, according to SEAI figures reported by Radio Kerry. Nationally, 33,048 grants were paid that year.
